Clean Water: Our Impact

Over half of the world’s hospital beds are filled with people suffering from a water related disease. In developing countries, about 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions. One out of every 5 deaths to persons under the age of 5 worldwide is due to a water-related disease. Clean Water that is safe to drink is critical to healthy living.

Since 2012, Just One Africa has been distributing water filters that are capable of filtering up to one million gallons of safe, clean water to people in Kenya.  We have seen an incredible reduction of sickness caused by water-borne diseases.  These filters are easy to use and clean, they have a very long life, and they filter out the diseases that cause so many problems.

We have distributed filters in  Nairobi, Amboseli, Kimana, Loitokitok, Tsavo, Voi, Maai Mahiu, Kijabe, Kisumu, Bondo, Kamuya, Seme, Kit Mikayi, Siaya, Uyoma Kendu Bay, Kissi, Mbita Island and Mageta Island.  Each of these areas has access to water sources, but the water is so contaminated and filled with disease that many people are getting sick and dying from the only water they have to drink. We are changing this, but we need your help.

Our Process

Our local leaders introduce us to District Chiefs, Area Chiefs, and other Government Officials.  We listen to the needs in the specific area and partner with them to bring clean water to their communities. We work with local leaders to establish a list of the most needy families and those caring for vulnerable children. We then train them on basic sanitation principles, hand washing and ways to keep their water safe. We distribute the water filters installed on two 5 gallon buckets – one for dirty and one for clean water. We then review with them individually how to clean and use the filter, sort through any questions, and make sure there is a clear understanding of the process.  These filters are a life saving tool providing clean, safe water so we want to ensure that they all are comfortable using it.

Some basic family and health data is collected on the recipient at the distribution and then entered into a follow up program database. We work with our local leaders to collect follow up data at different times to track our impact and the progress of the communities that we are serving.

We have trained our local partners to distribute the filters, train the recipients, and demonstrate sanitation best practices.  This allows for the Clean Water Program to continue without us having to be present at all distributions.  Thus, Just One Africa can effectively distribute far more filters than we could if distribution relied on us being there.

Just One Africa is addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goal #6 (SDG6) “Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.”  We are seeing remarkable improvements in every community we work in.  Read more about how we are addressing other Sustainable Development Goals.

What a wonderful organization! Just One Africa makes a huge difference in the world helping to provide clean water and water education to places desperately needing it. In addition, they reach out to the schools in my area to provide student awareness of water quality and the importance of giving to help others.
