In 2014 we worked hard to provide sustainable solutions for our partners in Kenya. Here are just a few of them:
- Just One: Africa raised funds to prepare the school building for electricity and then partnered with another organization to bring electricity to the orphanage and farm in Bondo. We had Kenya Power wire the 30’ by 60’ school building for outlets and lighting fixtures. We worked with the other organization to complete this project bringing power poles and running the connecting wires to the school building and orphanage. This is a huge step in the right direction; bringing them closer to sustainability and allowing for other income generating projects to move forward.
- One of Just One: Africa’s income generating projects is the Salem Bakery at Salem Orphanage. It has continued to grow due to the arrival of electricity. The large industrial mixer is now in full use allowing them to mix bread much more efficiently than by hand. This expedites production of the bread resulting in more loaves, rolls, and specialty items, thus increasing the output and therefore their income. There is a great demand for the bakery items and word has spread as the quality is excellent and price point is competitive. They are still using the motor bike to distribute to town as well as areas farther out increasing market opportunities. This sustainability project has created local jobs, bread for the orphans, and additional income that can be used for medical, educational, along with other food needs.
- Just One: Africa efforts allowed for a rain catchment system to be installed on the 30’ by 60’ school building in Bondo featuring a 10,000 liter tank which has the capacity to capture the large amount of water that can fall in a short time. This water is mostly used for the washing of the orphan’s clothes and for watering crops. Since this tank is positioned at the top of the property, it eliminates the need for pumping water up from the lake to irrigate crops resulting in a reduced amount of resources necessary rather than relying strictly on the gas powered water pump.
Thank you for helping us to raise the funds to do projects like these. Please considering partnering with us!
